6 Tips for Monday Maintenance Motivation

Updated: Nov 11, 2022

There are a few hilarious scenes in the iconic movie, "Office Space" (1999) where Peter Gibbons (Ron Livingston) stars as a company worker who hates his job and decides to rebel against his greedy boss.

There are two famous scenes where Peter, before his epic rebellion, gets told, "Looks like someone has a case of the Mondays."

  • Your Inbox is full of order requests to fix problems.

  • Your weekend wasn't long enough.

  • You didn't want to master challenging working projects, have tough meetings, get up early, or handle the busiest day of the week.

Monday follows two days of freedom and enjoyment, and it signals the time when we need to get serious and focus on the challenges of the week. Mondays are especially challenging for those in industrial maintenance.

How can you make Mondays less painful in Maintenance?

SIX TIPS FOR MONDAY MAINTENANCE MOTIVATION

1) Prepare For Mondays The Week Before

William Shakespeare wrote, "All things are ready, if our mind be so." Preparing your Monday tasks the week before gives your mind familiarity with what to expect on Monday. Lay out some simple objectives in a "to-do list" for Monday. Then, you won't dread Monday, you'll know what to expect of yourself.

2) Give Yourself Time on Mondays for "Unintended Consequences."

Historian Niall Ferguson said, "The law of unintended consequences is the only real law of history." Prepare your mindset and accept that unintended consequences will be known on Monday. However, give yourself some time on Monday to deal with those consequences.

3) Reward yourself on Mondays

Try to make Mondays unique. Reward yourself on Monday with your favorite coffee or protein-heavy and sugar-free breakfast option. If you're a maintenance manager, bring in coffee or breakfast for your team to help them tackle the week. Perhaps you can bring your favorite lunch or afternoon snack.

If you're a sports fan, get to bed at a decent time on Sunday night and wake up on Monday for a sports highlight. If you're an outdoorsman, wake up early on Monday and get some exercise.

Bottom line: Reward yourself on Monday

4) Swallow the Frog

Mark Twain once said, “Eat a live frog first thing in the morning, and nothing worse will happen to you the rest of the day.”

If you dread the upcoming Monday because of a daunting task or meeting, tackle it first thing. Don't wait to deal with the problem because"Conflict delayed is conflict multiplied" (Jordan Peterson).

5) Get More Sleep

Sunday Night Football isn't worth being exhausted on Monday Morning. Watch the game until half-time, go to sleep, and find out who wins on Monday Morning. Set a cut-off time for social media.

A well-rested individual is more aware, improved mood, is more alert, has less stress and anxiety, and has decreased blood pressure.
