How to effectively measure performance at your plant

In the article, "How to effectively measure performance at your plant," David Berger deals provides helpful insights to managing plant performance. According to Berger, a top priority goal to measuring performance is to "link lofty strategic goals promising high performance, to measurable actions that are meaningful to the people in the field and on the shop floor" (2021).

Berger points to the important relationship between a company's CMMS and a properly prepared performance management scorecard (PMS). Berger writes, "A Performance Management Scorecard (PMS) helps manage performance in a balanced, systematic, and consistent manner" which results in "...balanced, systematic, and consistent" performance management. Furthermore, a properly prepared PMS is key to what "translates vision and strategy into a tool that effectively communicates strategic intent, and motivates and tracks performance against established goals."

A solid PMS measures performance across five dimensions:

1. Customer dimension

2. Internal business process dimension

3. Innovation and growth dimension

4. Financial dimension

5. Environmental, social, and governance (ESG) dimension

A Performance Management Scorecard (PMS) helps manage performance in a balanced, systematic, and consistent manner. It is a management system that translates vision and strategy into a tool that effectively communicates strategic intent, and motivates and tracks performance against established goals.
